Stress/Anger

Stress is a normal part of life. Every day you hear people say “What a pain in the neck”, “I need to get this off my chest”, “my boss won’t get off my back”, or “I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders”, and many other things that tell us a) we all feel pressure sometimes, and b) our bodies and minds are connected. Feeling “stressed” is the body and mind’s way of reminding us to stay balanced and relaxed as we deal with life’s changes- it’s like the body’s alarm bell. Feeling stress isn’t good or bad: it can be caused by happy events (e.g. changing to a better paying job, graduating from school), as well as unhappy events (e.g. losing a job, worrying about paying bills). “Chronic” stress (e.g. always feeling pressured) is the real problem, because feeling that way puts an extra load on the body, and sometimes contributes to health problems like losing your temper too fast or developing high blood pressure.

So it’s a good idea to learn to manage stress. Getting exercise, like easy jogging, can be helpful. There are many relaxation skills like deep breathing, muscle relaxation, and guided imagery that you can teach yourself, and we can help. You can quiet yourself.
